Not only for Easter a welcomed guest and plushy companion, the Crochet Bunny. The crocheted bunny is unlike its fluffy model from nature not crepuscular and nocturnal and is due to its handy size not only a cuddly and beautiful decoration but also great as a bigger keychain.

The Amigurumi Bunny is crocheted only with single crochet stitches in spiral rounds and because of that a great project for beginner and advanced equally.

The here depicted bunny was crocheted using the “Schachenmayr Catania” and a 2.5 mm crochet hook. The bunny has a height of 9 cm (3.54 inch). To crochet a bigger rabbit use a bigger yarn and/or crochet hook.

Needed Materials and Tools

  • Yarn Colors: Brown yarn for the bunny fur, pink or vanilla colored yarn for the paws and face.

  • This pattern was crocheted using the “Schachenmayr Catania” yarn in the following colors: soft apricot/apricot (# 263), taupe/taupe (# 254)

IMPORTANT: This crochet pattern is crocheted in spiral rounds, means, you keep crocheting without joining rounds unless said otherwise. Always work a marker of any kind in the first stitch of each new round, to know when a round begins and/or ends.

Crochet the Bunny Head and Body

The body and head of the bunny are crocheted in one piece in spiral rounds with single crochet stitches. If you use safety eyes instead of stitching on the eyes, take care to attach them after Round 11 and fill the head afterwards with polyfill otherwise it will be difficult to do so later. You are instructed in Round 18 to crochet only into the back loops, those are the loops on top of a stitch laying in the rear.

Use the check boxes to mark your finished rounds, rows and steps.

Create the Fluffy Tail

Last step to finish your bunny is to create the fluffy tail and attach it to the body. Everything you need for this is a fork, white yarn and a brown thread with the same color as the body.

Crochet Bunny Tail Step 1

Wrap the white yarn around the 1st and 3rd prong of the fork (size can vary slighty from fork to fork).

Crochet Bunny Tail Step 2

Next you do a knot with the brown thread around the wrapped white yarn as shown in the next picture.

Crochet Bunny Tail Step 3

Pull the bundle of white yarn carefull from the fork and tighten the knot of the brown yarn. Make several more knots so it can not open again. You have now left and right of the knot two bundles of loops that you have to cut open at the top of the loops.

Crochet Bunny Tail Step 4

After cutting open the loops, rumple the now single threads so that the yarn gets a fluffy and soft texture. Finally use a scissor to cut too long threads to turn it into a round fluffy ball.

Finishing the Crochet Bunny

After finish crocheting all the pieces, you should have an assembly kit in front of you that looks like this:

Body: If not done yet, close the bottom of the body. To do this take your blunt tapestry needle holding the thread laying at the opening. Stitch with the needle through the front loop of all 6 stitches and pull tight. Push the needle through the now closed opening and let it escape through the side of the body or the head. Pull the thread tight again, cut the thread close to the body or head and knead the piece. The thread should dissapear inside and the bottom is cleanly closed.

Legs: Begin sewing the first leg one stitch row over the row with the visible edge (created by the round crocheted only into the back loops). Both legs are the same, so it does not matter which leg you sew on first. Still, sew on the first leg as the right leg. Sew on the second leg around 7 stitches to the right from the first leg. Both legs should be on the same level as the bottom of the body, that the elephant is able to sit properly.

Use the pictures as guidance to position the legs correctly.

Arms/Front Legs: Sew on the arms 3 to 4 stitch rows over the legs. Take care not to sew the arms onto the neck area (the smallest part between head and body). Take again the pictures as guidance to position the arms correctly.

Ears: Since you attached already the arms and legs you have a frontside and backside that helps you position the ears. Sew on the ears 2 to 3 stitch rows left and right from the top middle of the head. Use again the pictures as guidance to position the ears correctly.

Tail: Knot the finished tail onto the backside of the bunny, just over the stitch edge created by crocheting only into the back loops. Stitch with the tapestry needle holding one brown thread from the knot around the tail through a stitch where you plan to attach the tail and stitch again through a stitch directly next to the first stitch you poked through. Now knot the two brown threads several times together and cut the leftover thread close to the knot. The knot and the leftover thread should dissapear under the fluffy tail.

Face: Finally you stitch on the eyes and nose of the rabbit. Start with the nose using a pink yarn and stitch a triangle and a straight little line going down that triangle (see pictures). Afterwards stitch on one eye left and right from the nose from top to bottom (or bottom to top).

Stitch On Bunny Face

All finished and ready to cuddle, your own little crochet bunny with fluffy tail!
