Crochet the Elephant Head and Body

The elephant head and body are crocheted in one piece in spiral rounds with single crochet stitches. If you use safety eyes (or any other kind of eyes other then stitched on eyes) take care to attach them after Round 11. Make sure that the eyes are correclty positoned so that the trunk has enough space to be sewed on later. Use the pictures as guidance to position the eyes correctly if you should use safety eyes. In Round 18 you are instructed to crochet only into the back loops, the back loop is the loop laying on top of a stitch in the rear.

Use the check boxes to mark your finished rounds, rows and steps.

The elephant tail is crocheted out of a chain. Take care to not cut the leftover threads to short since they are supposed to create the scubby end of the tail.

  • 2. Row: 1 SC into the 2nd stich from the crochet hook. 2 slip stitches. (3 stitches)
  • Cut the yarn and pull the thread through the loop that is still on the crochet hook. Cut both threads down to 0.5 to 1.0 cm and ruffle both threads till they get fluffy and open.

Finishing the Crochet Elephant

After finish crocheting all the pieces, you should have an assembly kit in front of you that looks like this:

Amigurumi Crochet Elephant Assembly Kit

Body: If not done yet, close the bottom of the body. To do this take your blunt tapestry needle holding the thread laying at the opening. Stitch with the needle through the front loop of all 6 stitches and pull tight. Push the needle through the now closed opening and let it escape through the side of the body or the head. Pull the thread tight again, cut the thread close to the body or head and knead the piece. The thread should dissapear inside and the bottom is cleanly closed.

Legs: Begin sewing the first leg one stitch row over the row with the visible edge (created by the round crocheted only into the back loops). Both legs are the same, so it does not matter which leg you sew on first. Still, sew on the first leg as the right leg. Sew on the second leg around 7 stitches to the right from the first leg. Both legs should be on the same level as the bottom of the body, that the elephant is able to sit properly.

Use the pictures as guidance to position the legs correctly.

Arms/Front Legs: Sew on the arms 3 to 4 stitch rows over the legs. Take care not to sew the arms onto the neck area (the smallest part between head and body). Take again the pictures as guidance to position the arms correctly.

Tail: Sew or stitch on the tail with an additional grey colored thread in the middle of the backside of the elephant body just over the stitch edge.

Sew On Elephant Tail

Trunk: Sew on the trunk onto the face with a distance of 3 to 4 stitch rows from the top middle of the head.

Tusks: The tusks are sewed left and right under the trunk.

Ears: The ears are sewed on 2 to 3 stitch rows left and right from the middle of the top head. Sew on the ears only with the thread hanging from the top of the ears. Because the part of the ear that will be sewed to the head is not completely straight it will create a little arch at the top of the ear, that is intentionally to give the ear a more natural look instead of just looking flat.

Use the pictures as guidance to position the ears correctly.

Eyes: Finally stitch the elephants ears left and right of the trunk. Use again the pictures to position the eyes correctly.

Stitch On Elephant Face

And done is your very own crochet elephant!

  1. What a cute pattern instruction you have created! I have had this link bookmarked for a while – looking to crochet soon. Thank you! 🤗

  2. I did it! This pattern is awesome! I crocheted my elephant with bulky yarn using a size P hook and it turned out almost 6″ tall. I had to omit and adjust the last row of the ears, but that was simple enough. Love! Thanks again for sharing the pattern. ❤ 🐘
